Especially, for believers, the call to be “salt and light” has always existed in tension with a world that often rejects the message of the Gospel. In recent years, this tension has escalated into tangible Christian persecution for millions. According to the 2024 World Watch List from Open Doors, an organization monitoring global persecution, more than 365 million Christians (one in seven worldwide) face high levels of persecution and discrimination for their faith. The statistics are staggering: 4,998 Christians were killed in faith-related attacks, and 14,766 churches and Christian properties were attacked.
While many Americans view this as a distant problem, a new and troubling trend is emerging much closer to home. While not comparable to the systemic violence seen in nations like North Korea or Nigeria, hostility against churches in the United States has risen at an alarming rate.
A 2024 report from the Family Research Council (FRC), “Hostility against Churches in the United States,” detailed 415 acts of hostility in 2024. While this was a slight decrease from the 485 incidents in 2023, the data shows a dramatic escalation over the previous five years. For perspective, the FRC tracked only 50 incidents in 2018, 98 in 2021, and 198 in 2022.
These are not minor incidents. The 2024 acts included 284 cases of vandalism, 55 acts of arson, 14 bomb threats, and—perhaps most disturbingly—28 gun-related incidents, more than double the number from the previous year. This data paints a clear picture of a cultural shift where societal respect for houses of worship is collapsing, and believers must now consider the practical realities of their own security.
Starting a security team at your church and teaching skills such as learning survival skills training, homesteading tips and techniques, and personal safety and self defense training using less-lethal defense weapons should be a priority for your church in these times.
Faith and Preparedness: A Biblical Mandate
In the face of such trends, what is the faithful response? For many Christians, the idea of “prepping”, “survival”, and studying how to become a more self-sufficient person feels like a worldly pursuit. A sign of a lack of faith in God’s provision. The Bible, however, presents a different view. Preparedness is not a contradiction of faith; it is an expression of wise stewardship.
From the very beginning, in Genesis 1:28, humanity was given the mandate to “subdue” the earth and have dominion, not as tyrants, but as caretakers. Genesis 2:15 commands Adam to “work and keep” the garden. This is a call to diligent, active stewardship. Learning skills like homesteading, which fosters self-sufficiency in food and resources, is a modern application of this ancient principle. Proverbs 27:23-27 advises, “Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds,” highlighting the wisdom in managing one’s resources proactively.

Jesus’s own words in the Parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1-13) praise the five who were “wise” and came prepared, while the five who were “foolish” were unprepared and faced consequences. Being prepared is treated as a virtue, not a failing of faith. As history has proven time and again, “Chance favors the prepared mind!”
The Christian Ethic of Self-Defense
This preparedness must also include a plan for self-defense. In the United States, the Second Amendment establishes the “right of the people to keep and bear Arms,” a political foundation intended to protect an American citizen’s right to defend life, limb, and property.
From a Christian perspective, self-defense is not only a right but a profound responsibility. While passages like “turn the other cheek” (Matthew 5:39) are paramount in matters of personal insult or non-lethal offense, they do not abrogate the duty to protect innocent life from grievous harm. When Jesus told his disciples, “let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one” (Luke 22:36), he acknowledged the reality of a dangerous world where the means of defense would be necessary.
However, the Christian ethic demands a higher standard than simple self-preservation. As believers, our first priority should always be the preservation of life—all life, including that of the attacker, if possible. This is where a critical distinction must be made between the right to use lethal force and the wisdom of using it as a first resort. This does not mean that lethal force should never be considered as an option for protecting your family. Only that it should only be used as a last resort to thwarting an attack on yourself, your family, or your home.
The Wisdom of Less-Lethal Self-Defense Weapons
If loss of life can be prevented, it must be. This is why Christians, in particular, should be the most ardent proponents of practical self-defense training and less-lethal defense weapons. Weapons such as pepper spray, stun guns, tasers, and stun batons offer a powerful and effective way to neutralize a threat without resorting to a firearm.
The advantages are numerous. First, they align with a pro-life ethic by stopping an attacker without ending a life, avoiding a personal, emotional, and spiritual tragedy. Second, they provide a crucial “stun and run” option, allowing a person to incapacitate an assailant and escape to safety. Third, in a legal sense, using a less-lethal weapon makes it much harder for an attacker to claim “excessive force,” a common legal challenge in self-defense scenarios. A firearm, by its very nature, is always lethal force.
In an increasingly uncertain world, faith is not a passive hope but an active trust. It is trusting God by wisely stewarding the resources, skills, and tools He has provided. This includes learning survival skills, understanding homesteading, and embracing self-defense training. By prioritizing less-lethal options, Christians can model a path that is both wise and compassionate, honoring our right to self-defense while championing our sacred call to protect life.
